Some guidance notes on custom made lace wigs

The following guidance notes are intended to help you fill in the custom order form.

The form is intended for you to give detailed instructions as to how you want your custom lace wig made. Please read through these notes carefully, as they will help you fill this form in as accurately as possible.

How to take your head measurements

Before you start: Pin hair as flat and as tight as possible before taking the measurements. Cornrowing your hair is also an excellent method of condensing it as much as possible. This will eliminate bulges that distort head contours. Do not measure your head while wearing weaves/wigs/braids. Otherwise, the measurements will not be accurate.

  1. The Circumference of the Head:

Measure all around the head. Position tape measure so its edge follows the hair line around the head and nape of the neck. (Average measurement is 22.5 inches).

  1. From Forehead to Nape of Neck:

Measure from hairline at center of forehead straight back over crown to center of hairline at nape of neck.

  1. Ear to Ear Across Front Hairline:

At front of ear, measure from hairline at base of sideburn, up across the hair line along forehead to same point in front of other ear.

  1. From Ear to Ear Over Top of Head:

Measure from hairline directly above the ear across top of head to the hairline directly above the other ear.

  1. Point to Point: (From temple to temple)

From temple to temple across the back of head.

  1. Nape of Neck:

Width of nape.

Hair length: Please indicate the length of hair you want, FROM CROWN TO TIP.

Type of hair: Please highlight which hair type you require. Indian Remy hair is the most versatile hair. It can easily be curled, waved/styled and is less coarse than Chinese Remy hair. You should choose Chinese Remy hair if you like your hair to be very straight. If you want curly hair, you should opt for Indian Remy hair.

Hair colour: Please indicate which colour(s) you would like the hair to be. You can refer to our colour chart for guidance.

PLEASE NOTE THAT COLOURS MAY APPEAR DIFFERENT ON DIFFERENT COMPUTER MONITORS, DEPENDING ON BRIGHTNESS AND RESOLUTION!

If you want highlights, please indicate the base colour and the highlight colour. If you want two or more colours evenly blended, please indicate the percentage of each colour (it shouldaadd up to 100%). So, for example, if you want colour #4 and colour #27 blended together, but more 4 than 27, then you would indicate: “#4 (70%) and #27 (30%)”, or your desired percentages.

Hair texture: Please highlight the texture you require. Please refer to our hair texture guide. PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU REQUIRE A CURLY/WAVY TEXTURE, WE WILL TRY OUR BEST TO REPLICATE THE CURL, BUT RESULTS MAY VARY – WE WILL TRY AND APPROXIMATE YOUR DESIRED CURL AS CLOSELY AS POSSIBLE.

Density: Hair density is simply how many hairs are added to your hair system base. Please indicate what density you would like in each part of the wig cap.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU CAN ASK FOR DIFFERENT DENSITIES IN DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE CAP. IT IS USUALLY ADVISABLE TO CHOOSE LIGHT TO MEDIUM DENSITY AROUND THE HAIRLINE FOR A MORE NATURAL LOOK, AND MEDIUM (OR HEAVY) DENSITY THOURGHOUT THE REST OF THE WIG.

Hair style: Please indicate if you would like the wig with a fixed part, no part or free style (meaning it can be parted anywhere). Most people tend to go for free style as this offers the most versatility.

Bleached knots: Please indicate whether you would like bleached knots on the front hairline or nape. The place in which each individual hair strand is knotted into the wig cap (i.e. the knot) is most visible on dark colours (1, 1b, 2, 3 and 4). Therefore, some customers would like these to be bleached. However, it is very difficult to bleach the knots on dark units, and could end up shortening the life span of your wig. Therefore we don’t routinely offer bleached knots on dark coloured custom wigs, although on some stock wigs, the knots may be bleached (if they are bleached, it will be indicated in the description).  Please note all wigs we make have single knots around the perimeter – this greatly reduces the visibility of the knots, lessening the need to bleach them. If you attempt to bleach the knots yourself, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR THE RESULTS, NOR DO WE OFFER ANY GUARANTEE.

Hidden knots (silk base) are an innovation in lace wigs; this means the knots are hidden under a piece of silk in the front centre of the lace cap (either 4x4 or 5x5 large), and completely invisible, giving the impression the hair in that area is growing out of the scalp and totally eliminating the need for bleached knots. This is the best method to hide the knots at present.

Baby hair: all lace wigs can be ordered with babyhair – this is the fine hair around the perimeter that many individuals have by nature. The usual texture of babyhair is slightly wavy, however, you can order it in the same texture as the hair, or a different texture altogether. Please indicate which one you would like. Please note that on kinky straight units, the babyhair is kinky straight as well, unless indicated otherwise.

Lace colour: Please indicate the colour the lace or thinskin should have. The colour should match your skin tone as closely as possible.

Transparent lace is most suited to White/Caucasian complexions.

Light brown lace is suitable for light brown complexions.

Medium brown lace is suitable for medium brown complexions.

Dark brown lace is suitable for darker complexions.

 Lace wig cap construction types

There are different types of cap construction, and they all have their advantages and drawbacks. Here are some examples of the most common ones.

Full lace with stretch in the middle:

The most common type of cap construction and found in most stock units. Advantages: stretch panel allows for half an inch leeway, so will fit head sizes that are up to half an inch larger than the given circumference. Great for beginners who are unsure of their measurements! Hair can be worn up in a high ponytail. Disadvantages: wearing a style that requires the hair to be parted in the middle from the very front to the nape (for example pigtails or cornrows) can be a problem, though not impossible!

Full lace cap with no stretch:

This type of cap construction has no stretch. Advantages: some feel that it lies on the head flatter. Allows for styles that require the hair to be parted in the middle from the very front to the nape (for example pigtails or cornrows). Hair can be worn up in a high ponytail. Disadvantages: This cap is not recommended for beginners who are unsure of their measurements, because unlike a cap with stretch, a full lace cap does not give any leeway! You must be sure of your exact measurements when you order this cap construction.

Full lace with stretch from ear to ear:

This cap type is quite similar to a full lace cap with stretch in the middle, but the stretch panel extends from ear to ear. Advantages: stretch panel allows for half an inch of leeway, so will fit head sizes that are up to half an inch larger than the given circumference. Great for beginners who are unsure of their measurements! Disadvantages: wearing the hair up in the areas above the ear may be a problem.

Lace front cap with adjustable straps in the back:

This cap has lace in the front and a stretch panel and adjustable straps in the back. Advantages: no need to adhere the nape of the wig (you only glue it down from ear to ear), so this cap type is great if you don't like adhering the nape. It's also a great option for beginners who are concerned about their ability to apply a full lace wig. Disadvantages: you cannot wear a wig with this type of cap in a high ponytail, and you can only part it as far as the lace panel extends (i.e. in the front only).

Lace Front Cap with adjustable straps and machine made wefts in the back:

This type of cap has a lace panel in the front (width is approx. 3 inches in the middle and 1 inch on the sides), and machine made wefts and adjustable straps in the back. It is a great option for beginners, as it is very affordable, only needs to be glued down in the front and still gives you a realistic look.

Silk base cap (also known as hidden knots or silk top):

This cap type contains a piece of silk (usually located in the front centre of the cap and 4x4 or 5x5 in size) through which individual hairs are injected. A silk base can be ordered in the colours light brown, medium brown, dark brown, flesh tone and 'transparent' (i.e. a very light beige). Advantages: the hair in the area of the silk base has invisible knots (the knots are hidden under the silk base), which gives a more realistic illusion that the hair is growing directly from your scalp. Disadvantages: if the colour of the silk base is too light and does not match the colour of your own scalp completely, the silk base may require tinting - this can easily be done using tea (yes, tea!!), which is gentle enough not to harm your unit.

Thin skin perimeter:

This type of cap has a material called polyurethane (also known as thin skin) around the perimeter. Advantages: some individuals have reported that thin skin seems to adhere to their skin better. Because hair is not knotted but injected into the thin skin material, there are no knots in that area. Disadvantages: some individuals have reported that they get hot under thin skin, because it does not allow the scalp to breathe as lace does.

Types of Lace Material

A lace wig cap can be constructed from different types of material.

French lace is a popular choice for those new to lace wigs. It is the most durable lace type, but still fine.

Swiss lace is finer than French lace (but still very durable), and offers more undetectability than French lace.

Thin Skin, otherwise known as polyurethane (PU), is a material in which hairs are individually implanted through the fine poly skin base one at a time. Many like this cap material for its undetectability; however, you should be aware that it can get quite hot underneath the cap, as thin skin does not allow your scalp to breathe as lace does. Also, thin skin needs to be a very good colour match to your own skin tone in order to be undetectable.
